According to a report by The PUNCH published on Monday, October 12, 2026, Philip was travelling in a Benue Links bus to the NYSC orientation camp in Akure, Ondo State, on September 30 when gunmen ambushed the vehicle at Ibilo, Edo State.
The driver and two passengers reportedly escaped, while the remaining 12 occupants were taken towards Okene, Kogi State, where they endured harsh conditions, limited food, heavy rainfall and physical torture.
Philip disclosed that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million as ransom before reducing the amount to ₦30 million, ₦20 million and eventually ₦10 million.
He said the abductors monitored conversations between the captives and their families and subjected him to severe beating during negotiations after his father disclosed the amount he had managed to raise.
The victim’s family, friends and other concerned individuals reportedly made strenuous efforts to secure the captives’ freedom, with relatives selling valuable belongings to raise money.
Philip said the victims were eventually released on October 8 after ransom negotiations and payment. He described the ordeal as one of the darkest experiences of his life, adding that his Christian faith helped him endure the frightening experience.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of travellers along major highways connecting Edo and Kogi states, particularly amid recurring reports of kidnappings in the region.
